Hungary among firsts to launch Youth on the Move, EU 2020 flagship initiative

The Europe 2020 strategy proposes seven flagship initiatives to boost growth and employment. They include "Youth on the Move", which aims to improve the performance and international attractiveness of our higher education institutions and raise the quality of all levels of education and training in the EU, combining both excellence and equity.

Hungary faces uphill battle to reach EU´s 3% R&D target

Hungary´s expenditure on investing in research and development (R&D) barely amounts to 1% of GDP today. While Brussels sees boosting research and innovation as a way out of the current crisis, it is the economic downturn itself that is making the target seem over-ambitious.

EU leaders delay deal on 2020 targets

The European Commission´s new strategy for growth and jobs is on the ropes after EU leaders failed to agree hard targets on education and poverty – two of the five headline goals set out in the original proposal. The Hungarian PM, Gordon Bajnai however was positive about the results.

‘Who does not develop, will drop behind’ – e-skills-programs will be finished in this week

The knowledge of the new informatics technologies and the digitalization means the keystones of the Union’s competitiveness in the future. Although computer has revolutionized people’s life in the 21st century, a huge number of people haven’t got convenient basic knowledge about digitalization. Moreover fewer students intend to continue their studies in the informatics sector. The European Committee Enterprise and Industry DG started a long-term program in 2007 to remedy the problems. Each Member States joined to this initiative, and the campaign will be ended by the e-Skills Week (1st-5th March).

Barroso casts Europe as "Innovation Union&"

The EU´s new growth strategy, due to be rubber-stamped by the new Barroso Commission on Wednesday (3 March), includes a blueprint for transforming Europe into an "nnovation Union" by 2020.

The common czech-roman-hungarian applicaton has won the right to build the superlaser called Extreme Ligh Infrastructure (ELI). This is the first time, that a common research centre is built in the new member states.

Experts: false views dominate about value creation

The emergence of dinamic societis from both East and West motivates Europe to try to catch up in the international competition. Consequently, the recognition and support of talents has significant importance. This was the central thought of the program "Value Creating Talent", organised at Eötvös Loránd University on Thursday (24 September). In their conversation the experts and the students also discussed the issues of the Hungarian educational system.

Innovation from the roots

"The European Union (...) recognises the need to start the process of integration at the grass roots level" - says the Fact sheet of the EU Contest for Young Scientists. As long the three Hungarian contestants sweat in Paris, the EU finds it more and more difficult to match the goal for 2010: Increase the R&D expenditure to 3 percent of the GDP.

Legal expert: No never-never land with Lisbon Treaty

Ivo Šlosarčík is a lecturer of European and international law at Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles Univesity, and New York University in Prague. He is an expert on legal issues of European integration, judicial and police cooperation in the EU, and Czech reform of civil service and judiciary. He participated in the seminar on the ways how to influence European legislation in the new legislative framework after the Lisbon Treaty organised by the Institute for European Policy Europeum.
