Slovak science will not be saved by EU funding

The conference on Innovation policy and Technology transfer organized by AmCham Slovakia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Office of the Government dealt with the causes and possible solutions of the problems that bother the research and scientific community in Slovakia.

Anneli Pauli from DG Reasearch of the Euroepean Commission addressed the conference dedicated to situation in the research and development in Slovakia. She compared the situation in Slovakia to that in Finland -her native country- twenty or thirty years ago. According to her, even Finland wasn´t good at research and they were lagging behind other European countries. But then, there was the political will to move forward in this field and Finland took the right path. That is what she would advise Slovakia as well. The political will together with progress in R&D is essential because, as she says, then it will work perfectly- it´s like putting good quality oil into a good machine.

Dusan Caplovic, Slovak deputy prime minister responsible for knowledge-based society, was asked to review the Research and Development situation in Slovakia. He took quite critical stance and mentioned that not enough progress has been made. The main problem, according to him is, that the areas of innovation and education are not connected and function separatedly. That is something Slovakia has to change, he says. In order to do so, we have to start from the pre-school years and we have to improve our education system to build a real knowledge- based society.
